SYNOPSIS
SYNOPSIS
By 1927, Goddard Downs is the beating heart of Harry and Clara Goddard’s busy household. Their eldest children now stand on the brink of futures that reach far beyond the red Kimberley soil—Eleanor with her art, James with his dream of medicine, Ruby with a growing hunger for words and truth—while John and Matthew shoulder increasing responsibility alongside their father and little William still needs a steady hand.
When Clara’s mother dies, the long-expected inheritance finally arrives, placing in Harry and Clara’s hands the means to support these callings wherever God may lead. As some children prepare to leave and others remain rooted at the homestead, they must discover what it truly means to release in faith rather than cling in fear.
Love’s Unfolding Wings is a tender story of family, calling, and the God who faithfully holds both those who go and those who stay.

When God’s call carries their children beyond the horizon, can Harry and Clara trust Him with every step they take?
By 1927, Goddard Downs has weathered drought, loss, and change, becoming far more than a cattle station for Harry and Clara Goddard—it’s the centre of their family’s life and work. Yet a journey south several years earlier, through cities and towns far from the red Kimberley soil, opened their older children’s eyes to a world of possibilities beyond the boundaries of home.
Now, those possibilities are becoming decisions.
Eleanor, the eldest, feels her art straining against the limits of a makeshift studio, as an opportunity in Perth hints that her gift might belong on wider walls. John, still raw from losing Isobel in childbirth, pours his grief and love into raising little William and helping manage the station, even as he quietly relearns how to breathe and trust God again. Matthew stands shoulder to shoulder with his father in the work of Goddard Downs, already stepping into the responsibilities of the next generation.
James senses a firm call towards medicine and the lecture halls of Melbourne, determined to become a doctor who can serve far beyond the homestead. Ruby, keen-eyed and quick-witted, discovers a passion for words and truth that draws her towards a future in journalism. Annie and David, the youngest, still race through the homestead and schoolroom, their futures not yet defined but no less held in God’s hands.
When Clara’s mother dies, the inheritance she long expected finally arrives, not as a surprise, but as a profound provision. The house in Sydney and the funds attached to it offer a new kind of stewardship: the means to support their children’s callings wherever God may lead them. As doors open for some to leave and others to remain, Harry and Clara must learn how to bless both paths, trusting that the nest can be both full and stretching, both rooted and reaching.
Love’s Unfolding Wings is a tender, hope-filled story of grown children and steadfast parents, of calling and home, and of a God who is faithful to those who go, those who stay, and those who learn to let go in love.

Chapter One - Look Inside
Chapter One - Look Inside
The sun hadn't yet cleared the eastern horizon when John saddled his horse in the pre-dawn stillness. The work camp was stirring—stockmen's voices carrying across the yard, the clang of billies on the fire, the low murmur of cattle settling after the night. He moved through his routine like a man who'd done the same tasks a thousand times, his hands working while his mind drifted somewhere else entirely.
"You're up early." Matthew emerged from the shadows, his own horse already saddled.
"Couldn't sleep."
His brother didn't press. Over the past year, Matthew had learned when to speak and when silence served better. They rode out together as the sky lightened from black to deep blue to the gold-streaked copper of a Kimberley dawn, checking the water troughs in the eastern paddocks where the breeding stock grazed.
The work was good. Physical. Demanding enough to occupy his body if not his mind. John had learned to lose himself in the rhythm of station life—the endless cycle of checking fences, moving stock, breaking horses, repairing equipment. Some days he almost felt normal. Other days the weight of Isobel's absence pressed so hard against his chest he could barely breathe.
Today was somewhere in between.
"Dad wants us to check the bore pump at Stringybark Creek," Matthew said as they approached the first trough. "Reckons it's running slow."
John nodded. They'd been doing this for months now—Harry assigning them tasks together, teaching them the intricate workings of Goddard Downs in preparation for a future neither John nor Matthew particularly wanted to think about. Harry was only forty-four, strong and capable, with decades of work left in him. But the unspoken truth hung between them all: the station would one day need new leadership, and Harry was making sure his sons were ready.
"How's the cottage coming?" Matthew dismounted to check the water level.
"Slow." John swung down from his own horse. "Bill reckons another month if the weather holds."
The cottage. His and William's future home. After Bill returned to Goddard Downs, he’d insisted on helping. Claimed he needed a project to keep his old bones from seizing up, and together they'd been building a small weatherboard structure about two hundred yards from the main homestead. Close enough for William to run to his grandparents, far enough to feel like their own space. John worked on it most afternoons when the day's stock work was done, measuring and sawing and nailing with the same careful precision he'd once brought to boat building in Broome.
It helped. The simple act of creation, of making something with his hands that would shelter his son. Some days it was the only thing that did.

Back at the homestead, Clara stood at the kitchen window as William chased chickens in the yard. At two and a bit, he was all energy and curiosity, his dark curls catching the morning light as he ran after the indignant hens with shrieks of laughter.
"Careful, darling," she called through the open window. "Those chickens have sharp beaks."
William paid her no mind, completely absorbed in his game. He had Isobel's adventurous spirit, her fearlessness. Every time Clara looked at him, she saw echoes of the girl who'd brought tea to the verandah all those years ago, who'd married John with such joy and hope.
The ache never fully left.
"He's getting faster." Eleanor appeared at her elbow, flour dusting her apron. She'd been helping with the breakfast bread, though Clara suspected her daughter's mind was elsewhere. These days Eleanor seemed permanently distracted, her attention caught by the play of light through windows or the way shadows fell across the yard.
"Too fast." Clara smiled despite the tightness in her chest. "I can barely keep up with him."
"You're doing wonderfully with him, Mum."
The words landed with unexpected weight. Clara turned from the window to study her daughter. Eleanor was now a grown woman, but in this light she looked achingly young. Beautiful in that distinctive way she'd always had. Not conventional prettiness but something deeper, more arresting.
"I'm doing what needs doing," Clara said quietly. "John... he's trying, but he's not fully here yet. Someone has to make sure William knows he's loved."
Eleanor's expression softened. "It must be hard. After Barbara and Samuel."
Clara's hands stilled on the tea towel she'd been folding. They rarely spoke of the babies she'd lost. Barbara at three days old, Samuel before he'd drawn his first breath. The grief had carved grooves in her soul that would never fully smooth over.
"Yes. Sometimes when I'm rocking William to sleep, or teaching him his letters, or wiping his tears... I think about all the moments I missed with them. All the years I'll never have." She drew a breath. "But I also think that perhaps God kept my heart tender for this very reason. So I could love this little boy the way he needs to be loved while his father learns how to breathe again."
Eleanor moved closer, resting her head briefly on Clara's shoulder in a rare gesture of affection. "You're braver than you know."
Before Clara could respond, William's delighted squeal cut through the morning air. They looked out to see him sprawled in the dust, a hen regarding him with ruffled dignity from a safe distance. He picked himself up, utterly undaunted, and resumed his chase.
"Just like his mother," Clara whispered.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Another generation of Goddard ‘s forge their way into the Australian landscape. Two lives, so very different but destined to be together. On their path they befriend an unlikely old man, and he has a lasting impact on their lives. The ending is not really a cliffhanger but we are not clear where the young couple will go, how they will find their way, and if either will reunite with those they left behind. I could not put this book down, it captures your attention from the first words and holds you until alas it ends leaving you hungry for the more." Cthreatt

About the Author
Hello! I'm a proud Aussie, and I'm also a USA Today bestselling author of Christian romance stories that ‘touch the heart and soul’. I live on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, and I write Christian fiction that encourages a deeper faith in a world that seems to have lost its way. Most of my stories include an element of romance, but the main love story in each of my books is always God's amazing, unconditional love for His wayward children.
My husband and I enjoy spending time with our five adult children, and eleven grandchildren. When not writing, I love exploring the wonderful world we live in.
