Intro into Chapter One

Blessings of Love - Chapter One

Sydney, Australia

Scott Anderson checked his appearance in the mirror one last time before leaving the house and smiled at his reflection. No matter how many times his pastor reminded him that humility was a virtue, he knew the Lord had blessed him.

Especially today.

Not only had hebeen blessed with good looks and intelligence, but he’d just received the promotion he’d been working for for months. At twenty-four he was the youngest employee at Jennings Engineering to ever hold a position of this calibre. Today was indeed a good day.

The perfect day to propose to Skye.

Scott been dating the pastor’s daughter long enough to know that she was The One. Bright, bubbly and committed to her nursing career, not to mention, drop-dead gorgeous, Skye complemented him perfectly.

Although he knew she sometimes questioned the depth of his faith, he thought she had enough for both of them. Not that he wasn’t a committed Christian, he reminded himself as he left the house and climbed into his Mazda MX-5 GT convertible he’d recently bought. Sure, maybe he could do more for his community, but he was a busy man. He’d worked hard to get where he was. You didn’t graduate as a civil engineer with honours by resting on your laurels, but God had rewarded him today. He might not be the perfect Christian, but at least he wasn’t a hypocrite.

Like his father.

One of the things Scott loved about Skye was that she was so refreshingly honest. She walked her talk, and he admired her devotion to others less fortunate than herself, even if he did sometimes think she was a bit naive. Like right now, for instance, she’d been talking about going on a mission trip.

A mission trip!

He shook his head and glanced down at the little package on the seat next to him. Hopefully this will take her mind off it. The box contained the most beautiful platinum and diamond engagement ring he could find. If he was going to propose, he was going to do it in style.

Skye Matthews glanced at the clock and rubbed her hands together nervously. Scott would be here for dinner any minute and her stomach fizzed with anxiety at the thought of telling him her news—and what she wanted from him. Please Lord, soften his heart, she prayed softly under her breath as she fingered the cross neckla ce hanging around her neck. She loved Scott, she really did, and she knew her friends were envious that she was dating the most eligible bachelor, not just at church, but probably in their entire hometown. Scott was the whole package—handsome, intelligent, ambitious, and he was a Christian. Well, he came to church most Sundays. He was always attentive and lavished her with flowers and jewelry. She had no doubt that life with himw ould be amazing. And yet, sometimes she couldn't help but feel he wasn't committed enough. Not to her, but to God. For how could a man truly cherish anyone else if his heart wasn’t fully open tothe greatest love of all? She knew Scott's work was important to him and it kept him busy, but even so, she had the niggling feeling that when it came right down to it, his faith wasn’t a priority. In fact, sometimes she sensed a cynicism and hardness of heart that grieved her. Still, she reminded herself, he hadn’t been raised in a loving family like she’d been. Being a pastor’s kid, she’d been surrounded by love all her life. Scott’s father professed to be a Christian, but it was well known that he was a bully. Scott rarely spoke about his father’s behaviour, but Skye was sure that’s what had hardened his heart. She truly believed that this trip could be just what Scott needed to open his heart to a life of faith and purpose.

God, You’ve just got to convince him to go.

It wouldn’t be easy, but Skye knew one thing. She was going—with or without Scott Anderson.

* * *

Scott flicked a small piece of fluff from his trousers as he stood anxiously on the doorstep of the cottage Skye shared with her friend, Fleur, waiting for her to answer. When the door opened, her bright, pretty face beamed at him in a smile that sent his senses spinning.

“Wow, Skye, you look gorgeous. Hot pink looks great on you.” Her hot pink jump suit matched her bright personality.

Skye flushed coyly, as he knew she would, and stood on tiptoe to kiss him lightly on the cheek.

He squeezed her hand and inhaled her sweet perfume, and the aroma ofsomething delicious cooking inside.“ Something smell snice,” he said as he followed her in.

“I've made your favourite.” She gave another smile, but he thought he detected a flash of nervousness in her eyes.

Does she know I’m about to propose? He fingered the ring box in his pocket, imagining her face when she opened it.

“Beef and mushroom pie?” he asked casually.“

"Exactly that. Sit down, it won't be long.” Skye disappeared into the kitchen as he sat at the beautifully set table and glanced around the room. It was decorated simply, with just a touch of fresh femininity. Skye had only moved out from her parents’ home a year ago and now shared with a friend from her Bible study group, but Scott knew the decor was thoroughly Skye’s work. She would create a beautiful home for them both to live in, he mused.

His stomach was just beginning to rumble when she brought in the pie and vegetables, which looked and smelled delicious. “What’s for dessert?” he teased, thinking about the ring in his pocket and wishing he’d taken advice on what was ‘proper’ on these occasions.

Propose after dinner, before dessert? Or after they’d finished eating altogether? And when should he tell her about his promotion?

“Let’s see if you can finish your pie first,” Skye teased back.

They chatted easily throughout dinner, although once again Scott thought he detected a hint of nerves in Skye’s demeanour. As he swallowed his last piece of pie, she laid her knife and fork on her plate slowly, and he realised she’d barely touched her own dinner.

“Scott,” she said gently, raising her gaze to meet his, “there's something I need to tell you.”

“Good news o rbad?” he asked in a light tone, though he was beginning to wonder if something was wrong.

“Good, I hope.”

“Let's hear it.”

Her gaze penetrated him like a laser. “You remember that mission trip to build houses in Burkina Faso I was talking to you about a few weeks ago?”

He nodded slowly as dread seeped through him.

“Well, it’s definitely going ahead, and I've decided to go,” she continued brightly.

Scott opened his mouth to reply, but her words tumbled out.

“I’d really like you to come with me.” She grabbed his hand, her face filled with excitement. “It’d be such an amazing experience for us.”

He couldn’t believe it. Building houses in a country no one has heard of? And in Africa,of all places! He shook his head. “I can't take weeks off work, Skye.”

“It’s three months,” she said matter-of-factly. Both her smile and excitement faded fast.

He let out a heavy sigh. “I can't do it.”

Skye blinked as though she was holding back tears. “This is really important to me. The people over there need us. It’s a real opportunity for us to live out our faith, to walk in the footsteps of the Lord.” She smiled hopefully. “And it’s not forever. I’d really love us to do this together.”

Feeling a pang in his heart at the emotion in her voice, Scott moved his chair next to hers and squeezed her hand, the ring heavy in his pocket. “Skye,” he said, his tone soft, “I love you. I really want us to build a life together. In fact...” He went to reach into his pocket, but she cut him off, looking at him with eyes brimming with tears.

“I feel that way too, Scott. But I need to know you want the same things from life that I do. I’m definitely going on this trip, and I want you to be with me. If that’s not what you want, well, I don’t know how I feel about that.” She gulped. “About our future.”

Her words were like a blow to his heart when he realised what she was implying. His hand left his pocket with an empty palm. He felt like crying himself. Faced with the prospect of losing her, his promotion all of a sudden seemed less important.

But I've worked so hard! I can't give it all up to go on a mission trip!

His shoulders slumped. “I just don't know, Skye. It’s such a big step. After the three months, then what? The company won’t give me that much time off.”

And I was planning on saving for the wedding of the century.

She squeezed his hand, her expression brightening. “Isn’t that the beauty of it, though? To follow our hearts and see where the Lord takes us?”

He wanted to tell her that he didn’t have that much faith, but if their relationship was going to survive, he had to keep his mouth shut. Instead, he simply asked, “Can I think about it at least? Give me a few days?”

“Of course, but don’t leave it too long.”

Although she still looked upset, there was a new determination in her voice.

Later that night, lying in his bed and remembering that determination, Scott prayed with an urgency he hadn’t felt for a long time, but he prayed mainly that Skye would change her mind about going on the mission trip, because the prospect of him going wasn’t even an option.

* * *

Just a few blocks away, Skye prayed fervently that Scott would make the right decision.
